Drone alarm signal over Karup: Denmark in greatest danger!

On Friday evening, September 27, 2025, two unidentified drones were spotted over Karup Air Base, Denmark's largest military base. These remained in the air for several hours and their origin is still unknown. Government officials are speculating whether this is a possible “hybrid attack,” as vienna.at reports.

The situation led to the temporary closure of the airspace around the base to civil air traffic. On Saturday morning, the TV station TV Midtvest informed the public about the incident. Police described the situation as an “operation” as the drones moved both inside and outside the airfield. Danish Armed Forces units are currently deployed. However, it remains unclear whether the drones could be intercepted or identified.

Systematic threat from drones

The Danish government describes drone flights as a systematic threat. This comes after further sightings reported over several locations in recent days, including airports and military sites. Affected airports include Aalborg, Esbjerg and Sönderborg. The first sightings took place on Thursday evening in Aalborg, where different types of drones were said to have been used. However, the exact types are currently unknown. Danish authorities suspect that civilian fishing boats or cargo ships could serve as bases for the drone flights, reports ZDF.

The police have already started evaluating surveillance cameras and are looking for clues. However, no drones have been seized so far and police units are on duty around the clock. The Danish military decided against shooting down the drones to ensure the safety of citizens. Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard is also planning a draft law to increase the ability to shoot down drones.

NATO and security arrangements

The Danish government is considering requesting Article 4 consultations from NATO, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has assured Denmark of solidarity and close cooperation. NATO is also intensifying airspace surveillance over the North and Baltic Seas. In the current situation, Turkey has deployed Awacs surveillance aircraft to Lithuania to monitor the situation. Russia, meanwhile, has denied any connection to the drone operations, while Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius described the incidents as part of President Vladimir Putin's strategy.

In this tense atmosphere, there are also significant disruptions at Copenhagen and Oslo airports due to drone sightings. The Danish government sees the drone flights as targeted actions by a professional actor and a possible attack is assumed. In this context, the legal framework for drone operations in Denmark and Germany is also highlighted, which provides for high penalties for violations of air traffic.

Reports of suspicious drone flights are not limited to Denmark. In Germany, similar incidents were recorded at military installations in Rhineland-Palatinate, such as the US military bases of Ramstein and Spangdahlem. This may be an orchestrated approach that is placed in the context of hybrid warfare, as Liveye reports.
