Diabetics in court: Tricks for getting your driver's license!

On Wednesday, a 70-year-old Styrian man appeared in court in Graz after he tried to hide his diabetes from a driving test for a trailer. According to public prosecutor Eva Pachernigg, it was not only this concealment that led to the indictment, but also an attempt to hide a negative report. The man had initially received a certificate in which his insulin-dependent diabetes was noted, which prevented his driver's license from being approved. In order to avoid the temporary driver's license, he visited another doctor and did not disclose his illness. Despite these efforts, the first negative report had already been sent to the authorities, which posed another problem.

The situation escalated when a friend's daughter, who works for the agency, became involved. She asked a colleague to delete the email containing the unfavorable report, which ultimately led to the arrest of the man and two other accomplices. The defendant's defense attorney explained that there was simply a misunderstanding during the first examination and that the 70-year-old never tried to hide his illness. “I was nervous,” explained the defendant, who did not know how to explain the situation. The court imposed fines of up to 14,100 euros and suspended sentences against the defendants, which are not yet legally binding, as reported by krone.at documents.

Driving license and legal requirements

In Germany, those who acquire a driving license must complete extensive training, which varies depending on the driving license class and includes theoretical and practical tests. For Class B, which includes passenger cars, at least 14 hours of theoretical training is required. There are also minimum age regulations ranging from 16 years for motorcycle classes to 18 years for car classes. These requirements are reported by the official administration, which also clarifies that there may be additional requirements for medical certificates for people with certain health challenges such as diabetes.
