Coca-Cola: Mörfelden-Walldorf remains a lighthouse despite closures!

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) recently announced that it will close five production and logistics centers in Germany, which is particularly worrying for employees in these locations. A total of 505 jobs will be affected. But there is a ray of hope: the location in Mörfelden-Walldorf, the only one in Hesse, will not be affected by these drastic measures. This illustrates the outstanding position of this region for Coca-Cola.

The decision to close was motivated by various aspects of market development and internal efficiency considerations. CCEP has accepted the challenge of performing better in the highly competitive beverage market and is therefore planning to optimize its logistics processes. The intense pressure from large retailers to centralize their inventory, as well as the increasing use of beverage wholesalers by smaller customers, is changing the way Coca-Cola distributes its products. This ultimately led to lower direct order volumes in the logistics centers.

Strategic position of the Mörfelden-Walldorf location

Coca-Cola has had a modern logistics center at its Mörfelden-Walldorf location since 2022. The storage capacities are remarkable: around 300,000 crates of drinks can be stored here, which corresponds to around 3.5 million bottles. Up to 20,000 boxes are delivered every day, primarily to the surrounding cities in the Rhine-Main area. This efficiency and the logistics specifically tailored to the high requirements of this region show that the location plays and will continue to play a central role. With the Mörfelden location, Coca-Cola has managed to create a logistical hub that meets the needs of regional supply.

“It is a painful but necessary decision,” said Tilmann Rothhammer, Managing Director of Customer Service & Supply Chain at CCEP, about the closure of the other locations. He emphasized that the company is doing everything it can to find socially responsible solutions for the affected employees. It shows that despite the cuts and closures in other cities, people are not left out. This humanity in the decisions speaks for responsible corporate management in difficult times.

Challenges and the future of the company

The closures, which affect cities such as Cologne, Neumünster, Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, Bielefeld and Memmingen, not only represent a setback for CCEP, but also invite reflection on the future of the company. The need to adapt to changing markets is omnipresent, and the decision to maintain Mörfelden-Walldorf as a stable location is considered by many to be strategically wise.

Although the closures are perceived as a painful loss in the other cities, the Mörfelden-Walldorf location exudes a positive outlook. Thanks to its ideal location near Frankfurt Airport and connection to the transport network, it will continue to play a key role in being successful in German beverage logistics. These developments are important not only for Coca-Cola, but also for the entire region, which can look forward to a stable economic presence. The importance of this logistics hub in the Rhine-Main area could not even be overestimated.

It remains to be seen how the situation will develop for the other locations and what long-term consequences these decisions will have. However, the location in Mörfelden-Walldorf stands out clearly from the others and proves that flexibility and adaptability are crucial in the dynamic world of beverage logistics. With this clear focus on efficiency and future-oriented logistics, Coca-Cola shows that it is ready to actively address the challenges of the market.
