Chaos at the main train station: New plans for a safe cycling boulevard in Osnabrück!

Chaos at Osnabrück train station! The city administration is planning a radical redesign of the cycle boulevard to put an end to the rampant parking of bicycles. On Thursday, October 24th, the Committee for Urban Development and the Environment will vote on the hotly debated measures. Despite the opening of a new bike station in March 2023 and the removal of 183 bike racks on the station forecourt, the problems have not subsided - the unruly parking has no end. An untenable situation!

The fight against wild parking

Now a huge step should be taken! Around 300 square meters of the sealed ground are to be unsealed and planted to prevent bicycles from being parked in the new green areas. But here's the highlight: a whopping 35 of the remaining bicycle bars have to go! Low railings are also intended to ensure that cyclists do not park on fresh grass - a measure that could be a challenge for many cyclists. And that's not all: a new, barrier-free drinking water fountain will also be installed on the station forecourt.

The cost of these measures amounts to a staggering 175,000 euros, plus 139,000 euros for the renewal of the traffic signal system, which will also be modernized. The city is hoping for funding to reduce the financial burden. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2025! But what does the future of bicycle parking around the train station look like? This question remains hidden in the fog, because the city is also investigating where cyclists can find alternative parking options.

Bicycle signs and the truth

Particularly explosive: Stickers on traffic signs that supposedly prohibit parking bicycles cause confusion. City spokesman Simon Vonstein explains that these stickers do not come from the city and therefore have no official character. It is also interesting that parts of the station forecourt are private property of Deutsche Bahn, which can exercise its property rights here. A truly sensitive topic!

Osnabrück is facing upheaval! City administration and politics must act now - will the radical project create the long overdue cyclist's paradise or will the old disorder remain? The next few months will be crucial!
