From the Easter celebration to the hospital: shock diagnosis of diabetes!

A happy Easter in Bremen turned into a nightmare! On Maundy Thursday, March 28, 2024, a group of friends wanted to celebrate the night in the party tent on the Bremen Easter meadow. But a fall, triggered by an exuberant party mood, led to a dramatic turning point. The protagonist, who hit his head against a table, had no idea that this accident would change his life forever.

At first everything seemed harmless. A paramedic attended to the laceration, but then came the shocking diagnosis: a blood sugar level of over 500 milligrams per deciliter! For a healthy person, the normal value is between 70 and 100. The paramedic warned urgently that there was a risk of a diabetic coma. The ambulance was called immediately and the young man was taken to the Bremen Clinic, where he waited for hours in the emergency room for the results.

The shocking diagnosis

The next morning the ward doctor came with the devastating news: type 1 diabetes! A shock that changed everything. The young man's body could no longer produce insulin, which meant that from then on he had to take injections every day. “Didn’t you notice anything?” asked the doctor as he listed the typical symptoms. Weight loss, constant thirst and frequent urination were the alarming signs he had ignored.

Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs primarily in children and adolescents, but in this case it was only diagnosed at age 23. The young man had to learn to get to know his body again and listen to the signals. Carbohydrates became the new enemy because they caused blood sugar to skyrocket. With modern technologies such as glucose sensors and apps, he learned to keep his blood sugar under control, but constant monitoring remains a challenge.

The story vividly shows how important it is to pay attention to your own symptoms and to act in a timely manner. Ignored signs can have fatal consequences and significantly affect the quality of life. A call for vigilance for anyone experiencing similar symptoms!
