Traffic disaster on A7: Four cars affected, traffic jam to Hildesheim!
A serious traffic accident occurred on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024, on Autobahn 7 near Hildesheim. The collision, which occurred around 11:45 a.m., involved a total of four vehicles and caused significant traffic delays in the area.
The incident occurred in the construction area, where traffic was already at a standstill. According to the initial investigation results, a 73-year-old driver of a Seat car from Bremen noticed the situation too late and as a result collided with a BMW in front of him, which was driven by a 48-year-old from Erfurt. The force of the impact pushed the BMW into a Hyundai, which in turn crashed into a Toyota in front.
Damage and cleaning measures
All four vehicles suffered significant damage. Both the Seat and the BMW were no longer drivable after the accident and had to be transported away by a recovery company. In addition, operating materials that were tied off by emergency services from the Hildesheim fire department leaked. The Hildesheim motorway maintenance department took over further cleaning work at the accident site, which lasted until around 3:00 p.m.
During the accident investigation and the subsequent rescue and cleaning work, traffic was led past the accident site on the hard shoulder, which led to extensive traffic jams on both the motorway and the surrounding federal highways 1 and 6. Traffic is currently backed up to around 10 kilometers between the Hannover Süd motorway triangle and Hildesheim, making the situation considerably more difficult for commuters and travelers.
Police have begun an investigation into the accident and will provide further information as it becomes available. It remains to be seen how longer delays will affect the traffic situation on the motorway and in the surrounding area, particularly given the high frequency of traffic on a public holiday.
