Blocking times dispute: Heidelberg in the Zwickmühle between pubs and calm

Heidelberg is again the focus of a heated dispute over the blocking times for catering businesses in the old town. On Tuesday, October 24th, at 10 a.m., the Baden-Württemberg Administrative Court (VGH) will open the latest chapter of this emotional topic in Mannheim. It is a debate that has already employed several courts and that revolves around the question of how long the pubs can open without robbery of sleep.

The background is already fixed blocking times that the Karlsruhe administrative court has ordered: midnight during the week and 2.30 a.m. on weekends should close the tap companies to reduce noise pollution for residents. But the city of Heidelberg did not let itself be fed and set its own more generous opening times - 1 a.m. during the week and 4 a.m. on weekends. This procedure was contested at the VGH after the residents who had already sued against the city were again urged a fair regulation.

a new dispute over the night's sleep

The current argument leads to further shades. The VGH had already hit a blocking period regulation in 2018 that was disregarded by the city. The municipal council ignored the judgment, and everyone involved knows that the residents have the right to calm and relaxation. So can it be that the streets of the historic old town are fulfilled by celebrating guests until the early hours of the morning, while the residents of the noise pollution are delivered? Culminating in this conflict is the question of how many subsequent hours of the residents are entitled to and how the city fulfills its duties towards the residents.

This heated discussion takes place at a time after calmly calm during the pandemic. But now the old wounds are being torn up again. The residents have bundled their rights, and the VGH now expects a new noise report that must be placed on the table in order to check the arguments raised. Another stone in the way, but the residents are determined to fight for their night's sleep!
