New Munich marathon: Gernot Weigl loses after 25 years!

München, Deutschland - Munich -A dramatic change is announced for the Munich Marathon! After 25 years in the hands of Gernot Weigl and his renowned Munich Marathon GmbH, it is time for a breath of fresh air. The surcharge for the organization of the next marathon is expected to go to Munich Athletics GmbH, led by Jacob Minah. But this is exactly where the controversy begins, because the new concept will call many fans on the barricades!

Revolution of the running route

The most exciting change? The entire marathon is now divided into two 21 kilometers! Instead of leading through the often empty streets in the east of Munich, the route will lead through the picturesque English garden and the lively districts between the old town and Olympic Park. "We have recognized potential for improvement," said Julia Riedl, managing director of LG Stadtwerke. The idea is clear: more spectators, more mood!

dispute over the two-round concept

But the previous organizer Gernot Weigl raises the alarm and goes to the barricades: "It doesn't work for 28,000 participants!" He wants to prevent the enforcement of this new model with a petition, because he is firmly convinced that the proven concept provided success. Minah, on the other hand, only sees acting in the petition and cannot be disturbed: "The planning continues as normal!" The next Munich marathon is planned for October 2025, and preparations are already underway! However, the legendary finish in the Olympic Stadium is history, because construction work becomes the new target - another break with tradition!
