As of: November 18, 2024 1:39 p.m

In a dramatic operation, the police in Grünheide, near the controversial Tesla factory, pulled protesters out of trees! The municipality has ordered the evacuation in order to examine the adjacent forest for explosive ordnance. On Monday morning, five of a total of 13 activists were brought down by high-altitude rescue specialists. But the situation remains tense: several people continue to hide up to a height of 30 meters and appear masked.

The police have asked the environmental activists to leave the affected area voluntarily, otherwise they could face forced eviction. According to the officials, the exploratory work is necessary in an area of around 5,000 square meters to identify possible explosive devices. This measure is part of the preparations for the planned expansion of the Tesla site, which has been underway since the summer. The protesters who have been fighting against the only European Tesla factory since February see their freedom of assembly threatened.

Protest against police action

The spokeswoman for the “Turn off the tap of Tesla” protest movement, Karolina Drzewo, sharply criticized the police operation: “Under the pretext of an explosive ordnance probe, freedom of assembly is being trampled on!” The police, on the other hand, emphasize that freedom of assembly is guaranteed as long as the activists stay outside the security circle. The situation is tense and environmental activists are determined to continue their opposition to Tesla's plans.
