Dike in Oder-Spree: survived flood-only minimal damage!

Stand: 17.11.2024 11:14 a.m.

The Oder flood put Brandenburg to the test a few weeks ago, but the first reports from the State Office for the Environment (LFU) show a positive balance! "So far, hardly any noteworthy dike damage has been found," announced a spokesman for the authority. Only in a few cases there were “minor erosion damage” near buildings. The dikes in the Oder-Spree region withstood the huge water pressure and only 33 damaged areas were discovered, which are now to be repaired as soon as possible.

No serious endangerment of the dike

The detailed damage assessment will only be available at the end of the year or even in spring 2025, but the LFU spokesman emphasizes: "At no time has been a serious risk Situation for the dikes." This statement gives the residents hope and security, because the LFU is responsible for a large part of the flood protection systems in Brandenburg.

Another problem is the drift material, which was washed up by the flood. The clean -up work is underway, especially in the flood polder of the Uckermark, where the effort is enormous. Compared to the devastating floods of 2010, which lasted over a year and caused massive damage, the situation in 2024 looks much better. At that time, animals like Bisam and Nutria had dug large holes in the dikes, but such incidents have not become known this year.

The increase in flood security along the or has proven itself! The LFU is satisfied with the condition of the dikes and does not report any malice or problem areas in many sections, which indicates an excellent state of entertainment. Brandenburg can breathe a sigh of relief - the dike kept!
