Brandenburg an der Havel: 1000 superfluous day care centers cost millions!

In Brandenburg an der Havel there is an alarming oversupply of daycare places! Over 1000 places are unused, and that costs the city and the free carriers. The Situation is so explosive that the daycare requirement plan for 2024/25 has been overdue for months. The deputy Alexandra Adel von the Free Voters had announced the plan for November, but it continues!

According to the report of the municipal statistics office, there is a capacity of 6377 places in the 61 recognized daycare centers, of which only 5337 are occupied. This results in a shocking surplus of 1040 places! The situation was similar even in September 2023: 6245 places were available, but only 5369 were used. The city even invested in new buildings and spent over 1.1 million euros for module construction, but the capacity utilization remains dramatically low.

Six daycare centers before the out!

Experts raise the alarm: Six daycare centers may face closure! This means that every tenth facility in the city is at risk. However, those responsible emphasize that there will probably not be massive closures. Instead, the capacities in most facilities should be reduced. The low utilization also presents the carriers with great challenges, since they only receive grants for actually occupied places and still have to hold up personnel.

The unrealistic assumptions in the new daycare requirement plan are another problem. While two daycare centers are forecast for a new residential area on Hessenweg, the actual demand could be one or two groups. The planning for the residential area on the unit square is also still in the beginning, and new residents can only be expected in a few years. Brandenburg an der Havel faces a critical situation that urgently needs to be addressed!
