Winter wonder or drizzle? These are the chances of a white Christmas!

The question of whether Germany will be blessed with white snow at Christmas 2024 remains exciting. In recent years, the dream of a White Christmas has often been unfulfilled because the temperatures are often not enough to allow snow to fall across the board. An analysis of weather data since 1950 reveals which German cities have the best prospects of snowy holidays between December 24th and 26th. There are particularly high probabilities in the Erzgebirge, where in Oberwiesenthal, for example, there is an impressive 92 percent chance of a White Christmas, while the Harz, especially Quedlinburg, also shines with 74 percent. This is reported by echo24.

Weather forecasts and regional differences

Statistically speaking, Saxony is considered the snowiest federal state in Germany with a 34 percent chance of a White Christmas. In cities like Plauen, Chemnitz and Zwickau the chances are between 25 and 45 percent, as echo24 reports. But there are also less snow-covered regions. In North Rhine-Westphalia the probability is only 7 percent, while Hamburg with 8 percent and Berlin with 11 percent lag far behind the snowy areas. A year like 2010, when there was up to 40 centimeters of snow in Berlin, remains an unfulfilled wish for many, Spiegel reports.

Despite the current forecasts, there is reason for hope: qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung confirms that there are already weather maps with snow prospects, which is positive for winter sports enthusiasts and the longing for a snow-covered Christmas. While the Germany-wide chance of a White Christmas is only 17 percent, the prospects in the mountains are significantly better. Anyone who spends their Christmas vacation in snow-covered regions such as the Erzgebirge has a much better chance of experiencing the holidays in shimmering white, adds Spiegel.
