First aluminum bridge in Berlin: Revolution for pedestrians and cyclists!
A groundbreaking building will be opened in Berlin on November 18: the first bridge made of pure aluminum for pedestrians and cyclists! This innovative bridge connects the S-Bahn stations Adlershof and Johannisthal in the Treptow-Köpenick district and sets new standards in bridge construction. Thanks to the high corrosion resistance of aluminum, the expensive maintenance work, which is necessary every 20 to 30 years for conventional steel bridges. A real progress for the capital!
With an investment of around eleven million euros, the bridge was installed in January 2024 and is part of a national foot and cycle path network that combines important local recreation areas. This safe connection between residential areas and schools will not only promote mobility, but also increase the quality of life of the residents. But the construction was not without challenges: the two main segments of the bridge had to be planned precisely and transported to Berlin from nightly road closures from Baden-Württemberg.
graffiti and innovative construction
Despite a secured construction site, graffiti property damage occurred, which made the construction work even more difficult. The bridge is named at Hilde Archenhold on the occasion of its opening and is intended to serve as a model for future projects in Berlin. A comprehensive greening of the area is also planned until the third quarter of 2024 in order to further improve the quality of stay. The bridge was built on behalf of the State of Berlin by Wista.plan GmbH, supported by various Senate administrations.
