Berlin now has over 1.2 million parking spaces – where are they hidden?

There is a shocking revelation in Berlin: Over 1.27 million parking spaces are available to drivers! This impressive figure was determined by the transport administration and covers an area of 14.6 square kilometers - which corresponds to more than 1.6 percent of the entire city area. The data comes from a “measurement road survey” and will soon be made available online.

There are already 229,680 street parking spaces documented in the area within the S-Bahn ring, over half of which are chargeable. But the total number shows that there are tens of thousands more parking spaces in Berlin than there are registered vehicles! And that's not all: parking spaces in parking garages and on private property are not even included here. Estimates suggest that there are over 100,000 parking spaces in car parks and 80,000 in supermarkets.

Parking ticket available from Thursday

From Thursday, a detailed map will be made available online showing the exact location of the parking spaces. But be careful: This map could also contain illegal parking areas such as sidewalks and roadways that do not maintain the required minimum distance of 3.05 meters. Transport Senator Ute Bonde (CDU) emphasizes that this recording is not only important for urban planning, but also helps to make transport more environmentally friendly. With the new data, traffic and city planners can now take targeted measures to improve the traffic situation in the capital.
