Start-up boom in Germany: Courageous founders defy the crisis!

Berlin, Deutschland - The number of start-up foundations in Germany has a pleasant increase, despite the ongoing financing crisis. A total of 2,766 growth companies were founded in 2024, which corresponds to an increase of around 11 % compared to the 2,498 start -ups in 2023. This data comes from the startup association, which determines a positive recovery of the foundation figures from the declines of the past few years.

It is particularly noticeable that over 20 % of the foundations (total 618) are carried out in the software area, whereby the focus is strongly on artificial intelligence. Although the founding level of 2022 was slightly exceeded, it remains below the top value of 2021, when almost 3,200 new foundations were recorded. The number of bankruptcies has also increased since 2021, especially among online retailers who suffer from the current stimulus.

regional focus and future forecasts

Most foundations 2024 focused on metropolises such as Berlin (498), Munich (203) and Hamburg (161). Heidelberg has the highest rate with a founding rate of 13.5 per 100,000 inhabitants and is followed by Munich and Berlin. University cities such as Aachen, Darmstadt and Potsdam occupy places four to six.

The German start-up scene benefited from digitization and low interest rates during pandemic. However, the investors held back due to increasing inflation and interest in 2023, which led to a decline in investments and job cancellations. Nevertheless, forecasts by KfW and EY indicate an impending recovery of the financing options for start-ups in the current year, which lays the basis for further growth.

in a broader context emphasizes the that entrepreneurship in Europe is a challenging journey and that only a few companies that are managed by outstanding founders are successful. In order to remain competitive, Europe needs more founders who take the step into self -employment. Investors play a crucial role here by steering capital across borders to the right talents, of which there are talents and available capital in Europe. A favorable time is currently being emphasized to found a start-up in Europe, to invest in a start-up or to join you. The launch of new funds is regarded as support for such projects.

The dynamic development in the start-up landscape shows that despite the existing challenges and an insecure financing landscape, there is potential for good growth and innovation.
