Plasma donation: life savers wanted! Why everyone can help!

Octapharma Plasma GmbH has put the spotlight on the indispensable role of plasma donation in an impressive campaign for International Plasma Awareness Week (IPAW). Impressive discussions were held last week at the Spandau donation center between district mayor Frank Bewig, donors and patients. Hubert Franzaring, Managing Director of Octapharma Plasma GmbH, left no doubt that “plasma cannot be produced artificially – it can only be obtained through generous donations from people.” This message is clear: everyone can potentially become a lifesaver.
Plasma donations save lives
The donation center in Spandau is really thriving, supported by over 600 donors every week at 26 locations. A plasma donation has the potential to create valuable living space for patients with serious illnesses for up to three days. For treatment, adults with immune disorders require an average of 130 plasma donations per year! The necessary donations are frozen at minus 40 degrees to secure the vital substance for later use.
And that's not all! In a special love story, employee Marco Schmidtchen combines his commitment with his love for his fiancée Claudia, who is dependent on plasma-based medication due to an immune defect. For Marco, every moment of donation is not only an act of giving, but also a very personal mission. In places like the Spandau donation center, not only life-saving connections are created, but also real friendships between donors and specialist staff.
Community for Health
The Octapharma plasma donation centers are also members of the “Socially Healthy Spandau” network and are committed to the community all year round. These centers actively contribute to the health care of the region and work to further spread the importance of plasma donation.
Plasma, this liquid lifesaver from our blood, is 90% water, but also contains essential proteins that stabilize our blood pressure and support our immune system. Without regular plasma donations, many vital medications would not be possible, because only through the commitment of donors can this valuable substance be transformed into medicines for the treatment of patients.
