Explosives found in Neukölln: Man escapes from police with TATP!
In a dramatic turn of events, a man in Berlin's Neukölln district has alarmed police when he fled a checkpoint, leaving behind a bag containing explosive material. During the check at Neukölln S-Bahn station, the federal police wanted to speak to the suspect at around 3:30 p.m., but he fled across the tracks. Half a kilo of the highly explosive substance triacetone triperoxide (TATP), which has been used in terrorist attacks in the past, was found in the bag left behind.
Police responded quickly and detonated the dangerous explosives in a nearby park. The decision not to take the explosive to a distant blast site was made due to the high instability of TATP, which can explode spontaneously when impacted or subjected to temperature fluctuations. The explosion took place around 8 p.m. and was so loud that it could be heard “several hundred meters away.” An official warned that an explosion near people would have had catastrophic consequences.
Escape and search for the suspect
The man being sought is described as tall and slim, between 1.85 and 1.90 meters tall, with a goatee. The police have already secured surveillance camera footage and are planning a public search. The suspect was carrying a Polish ID card that had previously been reported stolen. So far there is no evidence of a planned terrorist attack, but the danger remains due to the explosives and the circumstances of control. The investigation is now in the hands of the Berlin police, who continue to search for the fugitive.
