Election preparation in Berlin: Important dates and deadlines at a glance!

Preparations for the new elections to the German Bundestag in February 2025 are in full swing in Berlin. How t-online.de reported, the election organization measures will begin in mid-January 2025. From January 12th, the parties will be allowed to hang up election posters. From January 14th, election notifications will be sent to around 2.4 million eligible voters.

In addition, postal voting documents can also be requested from January 14th, and these documents will begin being sent four weeks later. An important date in the run-up to the election is January 30th, when the state and federal election committee decides on the approved parties and candidates. The last delivery of election notifications should take place by February 2nd. The distribution of postal voting documents begins on February 10th.

Election day and voter turnout

Election day is February 23, 2025. You can vote in a total of 2,200 ballot box voting stations and 1,205 postal voting stations. Voter turnout is expected to be around 80 percent plus x. The postal voting period is shortened to two weeks, with the proportion of postal votes estimated at around 45 to 50 percent. Eligible voters are encouraged to apply for and use the postal voting documents as quickly as possible, as these can also be requested on site at the district polling stations.

The district polling stations will have extended opening hours from February 10th: weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., on February 15th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and on the Friday before the election from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Around 36,600 volunteer election workers, who have already shown interest, are needed to carry out the election. They receive up to 120 euros as refreshment money. Part of the election campaign is entitled “Democracy inspires Berlin” and includes, among other things, videos on platforms such as YouTube and Instagram.

Only those registered on the electoral roll can vote. How bundeswahlleiterin.de explained, an election notification indicates that you are registered on the electoral roll. The voting notification does not need to be presented at the polling station, but an ID card or passport must be available. Anyone who has not received an election notification by February 2, 2025 should contact the relevant municipality immediately to view the electoral roll, as a lack of notification may indicate that they are not registered and could therefore be excluded from voting.
