Transport approval at the Plöckenpass: Renovation after rock fall almost completed!

After the devastating rock fall in December 2023, Plöckenpass-Straße is finally being released for traffic again. According to gailtal-journal.at , the road will take place in mid-January 2025, after extensive renovation work, which was carried out in cooperation with the Italian street owner Anas. The mayor of Friuli-Julisch-Venetien, Cristina Amirante, emphasized the significant contribution of the Italian and Austrian authorities, while the provisional opening will initially be limited to the weekends. This means that the road on the Italian side will be accessible on each side, while renovation work continues to run at full speed on the weekdays.

The measures to secure

In order to ensure the safety of road users, extensive work was carried out, including the removal of around 500 cubic meters of loose rock and the establishment of stone chip protection networks. This first construction phase was crucial to make the road safely accessible again. The released route is a strategic connection, and the monitoring of the entire area is supported by attached sensors that can quickly capture potential dangers in order to react in time. LHStV. Martin Gruber emphasized that the delay of two weeks is unfortunate, but was understandable from a structural and technical point of view.

Additional geological documentation, as mentioned in the study by Mathieu Rodriguez about the Amirante Ridge and Trench System in the Indian Ocean, illustrate the complexity of geological structures that are also important when working on streets and infrastructure. Feuhrers in the relevant authorities have campaigned for the rapid restoration of the route in order to meet the needs of the region. This community effort is reflected in the close cooperation between Italian and Austrian authorities, such as semanticscholar documented.
