Trump praises the fall of Syria's Assad as a "unfriendly takeover" by Turkey

In an explosive appearance, the designated US President Donald Trump described the fall of the Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad as a "unfriendly takeover" by Turkey. These surprising statements fell during a press conference in his luxurious Mar-A-Lago in Florida, just a few weeks before he moved into the White House again on January 20th.

"I think Turkey is very smart ... You carried out an unfriendly takeover without many lives lost," said Trump and referred to the removal of the long -time Syrian leader on December 8th. "Assad was a butcher that he did to children is unimaginable," he added.

The fall of Assad and the role of Türkiye

The fall of al-Assad came after a lightning-like advance of rebels, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had long spoken out against Assad's rule and supported the Syrian National Army (SNA), which is active in northwestern Syria. Trump, who had previously emphasized that the conflict was "not our struggle", now seems to welcome the Turkish intervention.

"Nobody knows what the future has available for Syria", Trump admitted when he went into the uncertain situation in the country that has been in the war since 2011. However, he believes that "Turkey will be the key" for the future of Syria. However, Ankara's support for the opposition remains unclear, while the SNA continues to fight the predominantly Kurdish armed forces of the Syrian democratic forces (SDF).

Trump over the Middle East and other topics

In terms of the Middle East, Trump also spoke about his conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "I had a very good conversation with him," said Trump, emphasizing that they had discussed the release of hostages in Gaza. "If these hostages are not back up to a certain date, hell will break off," he warned and repeated earlier threats.

When asked about the Ukraine conflict, Trump said, however, announced that he wanted to speak to the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. "We have to stop it. It's a slaughter," he said about the devastating effects of the war.

Trump also commented on the impending state lock of the Chinese social media platform TIKTOK, which could be implemented by mid-January. "We will take a look at Tikkok," he said, adding that he had a "warm place in his heart" for the platform.

In a further controversial remark, Trump defended his election for the Minister of Health, the vaccination critic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. "He will be much less radical than you think," said Trump and assured that access to the polio vaccine was not at risk.
