Visit to bid in Berlin: Hundreds of demonstration against US politics!
On Friday, the day of the departure of US President Joe Biden, hundreds of people gathered in Berlin-Mitte on Alexanderplatz to protest against the policy of the American state and especially against bidges. Under the motto "Joe Biden is not welcome!" The demonstration was primarily a pro-Palestinian event that denounced the war in the Middle East and the US support position for Israel. The mood was tense because, among other things, the speakers had their say who pointed out that the "hands of Biddens were stained with the blood of the Palestinians". According to the first police estimates, around 500 people were present, many of them wore Palestinian towels as an expression of their solidarity.
In the course of the demo there were several arrests, since banned slogans were chanted at various points. A reporter from the Berliner Zeitung reported that the organizers repeatedly appealed to the participants via loudspeakers to refrain from doing so. The demonstration train had a fixed route that was to lead from Dirksenstrasse across several streets to the banks of Alexander, but it was stopped several times.
counter-demonstration from Israel perspective
The pro-Palestinian demonstration meanwhile ran towards a pro-Israeli countermovement that was formed near the Museum Island underground station. Around 20 people with Israeli flags kept slogans there, which contained direct criticism of Israel and his politics, for example "Fuck Israel". These counter -protests caused the police to strictly separate both meetings. Despite the massive police presence, it was difficult for the "Joe Biden is not welcome!"-demo train to move quickly. Finally, in the early evening, shortly before 8 p.m., the protest at a previously registered destination was declared over. The organizers asked the participants to go home, but this was not without further arrests.
at a time when the conflicts in the Middle East are again in the focus of the public, this protest shows the tensions and polarizations that exist throughout Europe, especially with regard to the Israel-Palestine conflict. While the participants raised their voice against bidges and the American foreign policy, the counter-demonstrators expressed their support for Israel. Such clashes between different political views will certainly continue to increase in the coming weeks and months, especially if further developments occur in the Middle East.
Details are still sparse, but the Berliner Zeitung reports that the police had to intervene several times during the protests to calm the situation and minimize security risks. The demonstrations were in a sharp observation of the law enforcement officers, who were prepared to act quickly with further escalations.
