Hamburg shows election winner: SPD remains strong, CDU overtakes the Greens!
The Hamburg choice of citizens shows a clear victory of the SPD, which despite a decline to 33.6 to 34.2 percent remains the strongest force in the city state. After the projections of ARD and ZDF, which were released in the evening, the SPD top candidate and Mayor Peter Tschentscher achieved his goal and explained that the bad-mood was held from the right corner in Hamburg. That was an essential point, especially after the SPD's election defeat at the federal level, just a week earlier, such as Tagesschau reported.
The CDU also celebrated success in this election and increased its share of votes to around 19.2 to 19.8 percent, which takes second place behind the SPD and before the Greens. The Greens, who previously achieved a record result with 24.2 percent, now have to be content with 18.5 to 18.9 percent, which the top candidate Katharina Fegebank disappointed. The left, on the other hand, has become a double -digit force for the first time with 11.2 to 11.3 percent, while the AfD increases to 7.5 to 7.7 percent. According to vienna.at the FDP remains clearly under the five percent mark and therefore fails again due to the election.
government formation and outlook
Tschenscher emphasizes that he wants to have a primary discussions with the Greens, but remains open to the CDU. A continuation of the red-green coalition seems to be favored by the citizens, since according to surveys 58 percent see such a government as a good solution. While the majority of the Hamburgers are against a coalition of the SPD and CDU, CDU top candidate Dennis Thering speaks that a government of this type could bring more stable political changes. The mood in the city shows less enthusiasm for change, and overall the turnout is around 67 to 68 percent above that of 2020.
The results of the election also have federal political effects, since the SPD in Hamburg confirms its course despite the defeat in Berlin. The two largest parties also fight to influence the political agenda in their city. The future coalition talks could be decisive for whether the SPD and Greens continue to lead Hamburg's fortunes or whether a new alliance is formed, including the CDU.
