The Flying Dutchman: Magical premiere in the quarry is coming!

Rehearsals for the opera “The Flying Dutchman” by Richard Wagner began in St. Margarethen on June 2, 2025. The intensive preparations are due to the impending time pressure, as the director of the quarry, Krenn, emphasized when welcoming the actors. Rehearsals should take place regardless of wind and weather in order to perfect the final details of the production.

The production, which will premiere on July 9th in St. Margarethen, takes place both on a ship and in a house, the interior of which is projected onto a rock wall by live cameras with mystical images. This is done under the direction of set designer Momme Hinrichs, whose aim is to create a mystical space between reality and dream. The costumes, designed by Eva Dessecker, are made of breathable materials in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” style and do justice to the fantastic setting.

The main actors

The main role of the captain's daughter Senta is played by Johanna Will. Tommi Hakala plays the “Flying Dutchman”. In the production, the singers share the roles: Elisabeth Teige, Johanni van Oostrum, George Gagnidze and James Rutherford are on stage alongside Johanna Will. Senta dreams of the sailor who is condemned to eternal life and is allowed to go ashore every seven years in order to win the love of a woman.

Additionally, the role of hunter Erik will be filled by tenors AJ Glueckert, Dominik Chenes and Nenad Čiča, while Jinxu Xiaohu and Brian Michael Moore return as helmsman. The part of Mary is sung by mezzo-soprano Roxana Constantinescu. Liang Li and Jens-Erik Aasbø take on the character of Daland, while baritones George Gagnidze, James Rutherford and Tommi Hakala are hired to play the Dutchman.

Musical direction and ensemble

The musical direction will be taken over by Patrick Lange, an internationally recognized conductor who has already worked successfully at well-known opera houses such as the Vienna State Opera and the Komische Oper Berlin. Lange is one of the leading interpreters of Wagner's works and conducted, among others, “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” and “Rusalka”. His debut at the Bavarian State Opera was celebrated for his engagement in “Das Rheingold” in summer 2021.

The Piedra Festival Orchestra will act as the resident orchestra and perform selected songs, including Senta's Song and the Sailors' Choir. The Philharmonia Chor Vienna, under the direction of Walter Zeh, will be active both in the opera and on stage. This mix is complemented by stunt action designer Ran Arthur Braun, who integrates exciting stunts into the production.

The performances of “The Flying Dutchman” are scheduled until August 23rd and promise a spectacular experience that will captivate both the audience and the participants. This production will radiate far beyond the borders of St. Margarethen and further consolidate the important position of Wagner's works.
