Demolition of the Cantian Stadium: Citizens fight for memorabilia!

Jahnsportpark, Berlin, Deutschland - The demolition of the legendary Cantian Stadium in the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark in Prenzlauer Berg is progressing inexorably-despite violent environmental protests! The Berlin Senate is steadfastly determined to demolish the old GDR stadium by summer 2025 at the latest. A new stadium with 20,000 places should take its place and will be the third largest in Berlin. But the protests of the environmentalists are loud and clear - they try to stop the project at the administrative court. A decision is already pending in the coming week and could decisively influence the further course of the demolition.

Environmental protests and citizens' initiatives

The building management under SPD senator Christian Gaebler pursues a tight schedule and plans to maintain two of the historical floodlight masts in order to preserve a piece of stadium history. In the meantime, citizens' initiatives and politicians from the left and green spectrum criticize the demolition plans. Stefan Gelbhaar (the Greens) expresses concerns that the financial means for redesigning the sports park are not sufficient. The plans to demolish first and then think about the subsequent use are not very well received - a long -term planning is missing!

The costs for the demolition and new building have now risen to shocking 188 million euros - almost twice as high as originally calculated! Supporters of the project, including politicians from the CDU and SPD and the State Sports Association Berlin, see the higher costs as necessary in order to build a stadium according to the highest standards. The Senate plans to transform the Jahnsportpark into a modern, barrier -free sports center, which should also be suitable for big competitions.

In order to give residents the opportunity to preserve memories of the old stadium, the Senate offers a unique campaign: by the end of October, citizens can independently dismantle and take seat shells of the Cantian Stadium. A piece of history to touch - but only for those who are fast!
