Berlin U19 women fight hard and secure sixth place in the DFB Cup!

At the 2024 DFB National Cup in Duisburg, the U19 women's team from Berlin proved to be a strong team. The competition took place from October 1st to 3rd and the Berlin squad consisted of talented players from renowned clubs Hertha BSC, 1.FC Union Berlin, SV Blau-Weiß Hohen Neuendorf, Friedrichshagener SV and SV Rot-Weiß Viktoria Mitte. The aim was to successfully contest the DFB national cup and perhaps even achieve a place on the podium.

Before the tournament, the players were prepared for the upcoming challenges at the Wannsee Sports School before a bus set off for Duisburg on Monday morning. There were three challenging games against the national teams from South Baden, Baden and Württemberg.

Tournament history in detail

The first game against Südbaden started anything but optimally for the Berliners. Despite a clear superiority, the opponent was already 0-2 after just ten minutes. The Berlin players created numerous chances, but repeatedly failed to score. The longed-for goal finally came thanks to an impressive individual effort from the excellent player Elfie Wellhausen, but ultimately the game ended 1:2.

After this bitter defeat, the players mobilized their strength for the second game against Baden. They showed a high willingness to run from the start and intensified the duels, which was clearly visible. This time the defense was excellently organized and the Berliners didn't concede a goal. After a clever combination, it was Elfie Wellhausen who took the lead again. In the end, the Berliners deservedly won this crucial game 1-0.

In the last game against Württemberg, which proved to be just as challenging, both teams were visibly exhausted. Nevertheless, the Berliners managed to score another goal through strong counter-pressing. Sari Saeland took advantage of the opportunity that presented itself in the opponent's penalty area and made the final score 1-0. The Berliners also presented themselves as very strong defensively in this game.

Trainer statements and outlook

Falko Grothe, the association sports teacher, had mixed feelings after the tournament. "We played powerfully in the tournament and determined the rhythm of the games. Sixth place is a good achievement and reflects the quality of the Berlin selection in this age group. But with a more concentrated first ten minutes or a better use of opportunities, we could have easily made it into the top three teams," explained Grothe. He praised the courageous style of play of his players and the commitment of those born in 2006, who are now ending their time as selection players.

Overall, the Berlin U19 women's appearance at the DFB national cup was a successful step into the future of women's football in the capital. For more information about this exciting tournament, including all developments and results, visit the website www.berliner-fussball.de.
