Forced evacuations in Hesse: rental debts drive people onto the street
In 2023, Germany experienced a dramatic increase in the evacuation, with over 30,200 cases carried out. This worrying number is an increase of more than 1,000 compared to the previous year, as can be seen from a current statistics of the Federal Ministry of Justice. The most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia is particularly affected, where 8,998 compulsory evacuation took place alone. Bavaria and Lower Saxony follow with 2,774 and 2,501 cases. Caren Lay, the rental and housing expert on the left, was responsible for the reasons for this increase, and was primarily responsible for rent debts, as well as delays in social benefits that often lead to residues href = "https://www.hessenschau.de/panorama/zahl-der-zwangsrae-in-hessen-z- zu-v1.Mehr-zwangsrae conversions-100.html"> hessenschau.de reported. The majority of the compulsory evacuations are due to unfulfilled rental obligations that can quickly accumulate if housing benefit or costs of the accommodation are not paid in time. Lay also criticized the federal government, which despite promises to limit rent increases did not implement effective protection for tenants. According to her, more and more people are getting into the debt trap of the housing market and thereby losing her apartments, which further tightens the situation for the tenants that are already stressed. In other federal states such as Brandenburg and Schleswig-Holstein, however, the numbers have decreased slightly, which shows that the problems are different in region, such as Zeit Online reported.
