Forest closures in Neusorg: Ebnath Forest starts big timber harvest!
In October, Forst Ebnath GmbH will start the necessary wood harvesting and care work in the Neusorg forest area to promote the mixed tree.
Forest closures in Neusorg: Ebnath Forest starts big timber harvest!
In the Bärenrangen forest area near Neusorg, numerous paths have been closed since the beginning of October. The reason for this is urgent timber harvesting measures, as reported by Forst Ebnath GmbH. The measures are a response to unfavorable weather conditions recorded over the summer that impacted the bark beetle. Forst Ebnath GmbH is now planning to begin forest management with highly mechanized wood harvesting.
As the managing director of Forst Ebnath GmbH, Jörg Tuchbreiter, explains, the coniferous forests in the area around Neusorg in particular should be treated. This work is necessary to provide the hardwood species with enough space to grow. The aim is to refresh the hardwood and create healthy growing conditions. Lighting conditions in the coniferous stands should also be improved in order to plant climate-stable mixed tree species there.
Timber harvesting and sawmills
According to Tuchbreiter, this maintenance involves removing an estimated 10,000 cubic meters of wood from the approximately 300 hectare forest area. Forst Ebnath GmbH manages a total of around 3,500 hectares of forest. The majority of the resulting wood is used as construction and furniture wood, which contributes to the long-term storage of carbon dioxide in wood products. The buyers are primarily local sawmills, while only a small portion of the wood is sold as firewood.
The wood harvest includes spruce, pine and larch, although the selection of new tree species to be planted depends on the location and its yield potential. Trees such as oak, beech and sycamore are more resilient to drought. Tuchbreiter points out that they also have experience with Douglas firs, which have been grown in Germany since the 19th century. This timber harvest is expected to last until December, although the duration depends heavily on weather conditions.
Forest conversion project and path closures
The regular closures of forest areas during timber harvesting are unavoidable, and Forst Ebnath GmbH asks visitors for their understanding. Pressure from logging can also cause paths to become damaged, but these will be repaired after the work is completed. These measures are part of a larger forest conversion aimed at transforming the forest area in the medium term. This is not only intended to improve the quality of the forest, but also to avoid bare areas caused by the bark beetle.
Forst Ebnath GmbH, a German stock corporation with a long history, was founded in 1898 and specializes in the management of forests. With the planned wood harvesting measure and the subsequent forest conversion project, it appears well equipped to counteract the challenges of climate change and strengthen its forest stock.
