A shocking case of neglect caused a stir in Schweinfurt: a 16-year-old girl died of malnutrition, and the parents were guilty, but the court decided not to impose a punishment for them. The 51-year-old father and the 48-year-old mother already bear the severe burden of the loss, which the court saw as a sufficient punishment. The tragedy occurred on December 19, 2022, when the girl died of multiplem organ failure, caused by extreme malnutrition. Their body only weighed 19 kilograms and was described as "a skeleton with skin and bone".

parents under pressure: Inadequate medical help

The parents, an educator and a technical employee were on trial because they had failed to look for medical help for their strongly underweight daughter. The indictment included serious allegations such as suspension and attempted manslaughter. During the trial, the parents stated that their daughter did not want to go to the hospital due to an anxiety disorder and they were unable to push them. They were not aware that the condition of their daughter was life -threatening.

The public prosecutor called for a conviction for attempted manslaughter and a suspended sentence of two years. However, the court decided that the consequences that have already been suffered for the parents weigh so heavily that an additional punishment would not be appropriate. The judges referred to a paragraph of the Criminal Code, which says that a punishment can be omitted if the consequences of the crime are so serious for the perpetrator that punishment appears inappropriately. The accused did without appeals, and the judgment is not yet final.
