It is astonishing that these considerations are even made when the traits and attitude of a man like Trump cannot easily be compared to the values of a politician like Harris. The debate is accompanied by a shocking title: “Sympathy for the Devil,” inspired by an iconic Rolling Stones song and a new book by Bruno Patino that explores the dark sides of power.
Patino, a renowned media professional, highlights in his work the brutal rule of Augusto Pinochet, the Chilean dictator who came to power through a military coup in 1973. Under his tyrannical leadership, thousands of people suffered unimaginable atrocities; Torture and political murders were commonplace. Patino describes his own harrowing encounter with Pinochet in 1992, where he witnessed the ice-cold confidence of the dictator who showed no remorse for his actions. “The Chinese killed many more people than my regime,” Pinochet claimed, while dismissing the horrific mass graves as “austerity.” These frightening memories raise concerns about the current political landscape, where dictators like Maduro and Putin spread terror.
The shadows of dictatorship
The alarming tendency to relativize evil is becoming increasingly clear. While the “Woke” movement calls for more integrity and respect, many companies in Switzerland seem to have no qualms about supporting Trump – despite his mafia-like traits and the allegations made against him. How can it be that these companies that donate to his campaign are considered “good citizens”? Trump is the man who orchestrated the storming of the Capitol and is still admired.
A touch of decadent opportunism is permeating Switzerland. The abandonment of moral values and the lack of integrity are alarming. It is a dangerous path we are on - without a clear moral compass, society will pay dearly for it. The question remains: How much longer can we play this game before the consequences catch up with us?
