A3 expansion near Regensburg: 6 lanes are now rolling on a new noise barrier!
After six years of hard work, the six-lane expansion of the A3 between the Regensburg motorway junction and the Rosenhof junction has finally been completed. The federal Autobahn GmbH is celebrating this great success, because since Sunday evening the vehicles have been flowing traffic-free over the new, sound-absorbing surface for the first time!
The widening from four to six lanes was completed in December 2023, but final completion required additional work over several weekends in the fall. More than 15 kilometers of road had to be extensively renovated, including the construction of 16 impressive bridges - one of which spans 23 Deutsche Bahn tracks. An ambitious project that cost a total of 290 million euros!
A3 – a lifeline for the region
The A3, which stretches from North Rhine-Westphalia to Passau, is the second longest motorway in Germany after the A7 and acts as a crucial transport link between the Rhine-Main region and Austria and southeastern Europe. It is an essential lifeline for Regensburg, connecting not only trade and commerce but also industrial companies and educational institutions. In 2010, an impressive 67,000 vehicles rolled here every day - and according to forecasts, this number could rise to 82,000 by 2039!
This costly and complex expansion was included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 as an “urgent need” in 2016. The patience of road users has been put to the test, but now that the motorway is open 24 hours a day, everyone can look forward to future-proof road traffic!
