Wafts of fog over Bavaria: Hoch Zayyan is causing unusual weather!
A fascinating weather phenomenon recently enveloped parts of Bavaria in thick fog! The high pressure area Zayyan, which hovers over Eastern Europe, is causing a persistent inversion weather situation that is severely reducing visibility in many regions. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), this is a rare event that surprises people in the region and plunges the landscape into a mystical gray.
On Wednesday, November 6th, the day started foggy in many parts of Bavaria, while drizzle was even possible in the north. While temperatures fluctuated between 6 and 13 degrees, the higher altitudes of the Alps could reach up to 16 degrees. The sun appeared mainly in the Alps and in the higher mountains, while most other areas suffered from a cloudy blanket of high fog. The weather remained cloudy in most regions on Thursday, with maximum temperatures similar to the previous day.
“Methuselah High” causes unusual weather conditions
The persistence of the Zayyan anticyclone is particularly striking. Meteorologist Michael Sachweh from Bayerischer Rundfunk describes it as a “Methuselah high” because it hardly moves and thus promotes the formation of fog in southern Bavaria. “This high is so pinned that it is very unusual,” explains Sachweh. According to him, such stable high pressure systems are extremely rare and could continue to influence the weather conditions in the region in the coming days.
The combination of fog and mild temperatures amazed the people of Bavaria. While the sun shines in the high altitudes, the fog remains persistent in the lower areas. A weather event that not only limits visibility, but also concerns people's minds!
