Garching and Munich: Radschnellweg is picking up speed - 4.5 million euros for expansion!

In the district of Munich, the plans for the next section of the cycle fast path in Garching have now been completed and the construction work is scheduled to begin next year. The route will start in the district of Hochbrück, north of the federal road 471, and extend to the research campus after crossing the A 9. This cycling fast path will be very important in Bavaria, since it should create a direct connection between the university city of Garching and the state capital of Munich.

The necessary financial resources are set for the next section: the costs amount to around 4.5 million euros. However, the Munich district council has determined that this decision is initially subject to reservation. In order to ensure that the planned work runs smoothly, a funding application will be submitted to the Federal Ministry of Transport in the coming days. The Federal Ministry has already signaled that it is willing to cover up to 75 percent of the eligible costs, which offers the project a decisive financial support.

Details on the Radschnellweg

The planned cycle path will use existing paths in several places, which, however, have to be expanded in many sections to ensure the required width of four meters. Particular attention is paid to the crossings and the comparison with the existing circumstances; In some places it will be necessary to do without the construction of a separate sidewalk. This differs from the already opened section, which runs from the intersection of the federal roads 471 and 13 along the Schleißheim channel and was released for cyclists and pedestrians in July.

The realization of the third construction phase, which also includes a 200 meter long bridge over the B 471 at the Hochbrück underground station, is planned for 2026. This bridge will represent a central hub for bicycle traffic and thus contribute to further improvement in the infrastructure.

Overall, the development of the cycle path in Garching shows how important the promotion of environmentally friendly traffic alternatives in urban areas is. The progress in this project could take on a role model for other regions in Bavaria and beyond. At www.sueddeutsche.de .
