Road expansion in Berka: Flood protection and fire brigade in focus!
The small town of Berka, part of Katlenburg-Lindau, is buzzing! Over 50 citizens flocked to the local council meeting in the festival hall and ensured a record attendance. Local mayor Eckhard Steinmetz was thrilled: “It has never been so full in my entire term in office!” The topics of flood protection, road expansion and the planned “Landstrasse” development area caused heated discussions.
Flood protection in focus
A central concern of citizens is flood protection. Steinmetz called for urgent measures after the devastating heavy rain events in June and the Christmas flood made the dangers for Berka clear. “We have to cut back the bushes and trees on the Rhume to ensure flow!” shouted a concerned citizen. The cleanliness of the canals is also on the list of investment wishes for 2025.
The head of the building authority, Evelyn Kopp-Boetzel, announced positive news about the expansion of the “Am Tannhof” road: “The construction work should be completed in the next two weeks.” The costs of around 550,000 euros will largely be covered by the village development program. But while progress is visible here, things look bleak for the “Landstrasse” development area. Municipal mayor Uwe Ahrens explained that due to strict distance rules, the area could be reduced to a maximum of ten building sites - 36 were originally planned!
The challenges don’t stop there. The fire station in Berka is overcrowded and a solution to the space problems is still pending. Ahrens emphasized that a new building is currently not financially feasible as the costs would run into the millions and no subsidies from the state can be expected. “We have to be patient and weigh up all options,” he appealed to the assembled citizens.
