Lech Renaturation: A generation project for more nature and relaxation!

In the town hall Gersthofen, around 100 people gathered on Thursday evening, while the Christmas market was opened with live music outside. Gudrun Seidel, the head of the Donauwörth water management office, welcomed those present and presented the exciting project Licca Liber III, which deals with the renaturation of the Lech. The focus is on the section between the confluence of the Wertach and the Lech Canal in Ostendorf - a distance of about 20 kilometers.

The residents show great interest in the nature of the Lech! An online survey in September showed that over 850 participants use the river primarily as a local recreation area and would like a redesign that create habitat for animals and plants. Many people use the riverside paths to cycle and go for a walk. The Water Management Office has developed specific measures for renaturation from this feedback, which are to be implemented as early as 2025. Ufer attachments are broken down to give the Lech room to a natural expansion, explains Viola Frietsch, the project manager.

The Lech is attributed to the wild river

But that's just the beginning! The water management office also plans to install deadwood and stone bolts in order to stabilize the course of the river and to promote the self -regulation of the Lech. From the coming year, computer simulations will be carried out to analyze the effects of these interventions. Viola Frietsch emphasizes that the drainage options of the lech water are carefully examined.

The implementation of the first measures depends on many formal hurdles, including planning approval procedures. Gudrun Seidel estimates that the first results could be visible around 2035. One participant sums it up: Licca Liber is a generation project! The Lech has been changed for decades, and it will take time to develop into the wild river with a rich habitat that it was once.
