tradition and conditions of participation
The horn sled racing in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is celebrated annually on January 6th, the Epiphany, has a long tradition. The first competition took place in 1970 and was originally organized as a bet. Seven sleds took part and the time measurement took place with wristwatches. In the early years the racetrack was still illuminated with torches.
Participation is only possible with traditional “Werdenfelser” horn sleds that must correspond to strict dimensions. These must mainly consist of wood, with exceptions to materials such as rails and fittings. All slides are checked for control of the rules before the race. The best way to travel is by public transport, and parking facilities are available at the Olympic Stadium, from where the racetrack can be reached in about 10 minutes on foot.
Ticket prices for spectators are 10 euros for adults, 5 euros for young people between the ages of 13 and 18, while children up to 12 years can take part in free. Competitors have to pay a participation fee of 50 euros, which is to be paid in cash when picking up the slide on the competition day. The age limit for participants is at least 18 years, although 15-year-olds can also take part with the written permission of the parents, such as iamexpat.de reported.
