Storm warning in Bavaria: Frost and flooding – this is what happens next!
On January 12, 2025, the German Weather Service (DWD) warns of stormy weather in Bavaria. Affected regions include the Erzgebirgskreis, Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge, Bayreuth, Cham, Regen, Straubing, Deggendorf and Freyung-Grafenau. In these areas, gusts of wind with speeds of around 65 km/h are expected, although peak values of up to 75 km/h can even be reached in exposed locations. Gale warnings are in effect until 6am on Sunday, January 12th.
In addition, the DWD provides information about slippery conditions throughout the Free State. On the southern edge of the Alps, temperatures can drop to minus nine degrees. The ice and frost warnings are valid until midday on Saturday, January 11th. While the flood situation in northern Bavaria is slowly easing, water levels had previously risen in some places. Reporting level three out of four was exceeded in northern Bavaria, but no longer for built-up areas. In some rivers, such as the lower reaches of the Franconian Saale, the Wörnitz and the upper reaches of the Altmühl, reporting level two was exceeded in some places Mercury reported.
Weather conditions and further developments
How Weatherhazards.de reported this morning, the northwesterly flow is bringing polar sea air that is increasingly under the influence of high pressure. In the morning it can be slippery in parts due to snowfall, frost or freezing wet conditions. Particularly in the Erzgebirge, light snowfalls with new snow amounts of around 3 cm are expected. Light snowfall of up to 3 cm, locally even up to 5 cm, is also forecast in the Bavarian Forest and on the eastern edge of the Alps.
Temperatures could be slightly to moderately frosty on Friday morning, with areas of light permanent frost during the day. On Monday night, a moderate frost is expected in large parts of Bavaria, especially near the Alps. Temperatures there can drop below minus 10 degrees, especially when snow clears. The wind brings gusts of up to 60 km/h on the Baltic Sea coast and in the Ore Mountains, while gusts of up to 80 km/h can occur in exposed locations and the higher eastern mountains. The wind will die down in the morning, but squalls can still be expected in the summits of the Ore Mountains.
