Pupils polish stumbling blocks: memory of DACHHAUS victim!

St.-Peter-Straße 2, 85221 Dachau, Deutschland - In Dachau, the memory of the victims of National Socialism comes alive! The brilliant stumbling blocks that are embedded in the sidewalk were cleaned on Sunday by committed students from the Ignaz-Taschner-Gymnasium. With red -painted fingernails and a lot of dedication, they polished the memorial stones that are reminiscent of the tragic fates of people like the Jewish doctor Samuel Guild. "It is important that we do not forget what was done to these people," explains the student Leonie Schweitzer while she cleans the stone with a gilde name in St.-Peter-Strasse 2.

Samuel Gilde, born in Lithuania in 1874, was banned from profession in 1938 by the National Socialists. He tried to dive into Dachau, but was caught by the SS and brought to the concentration camp. There he had to do forced labor before he was murdered in 1944. The memorial campaign in Dachau is not just a ritual, but an urgent appeal to keep the memory awake. This year the tour guides have set up small stations on each of the 15 stumbling blocks to inform passers -by about the moving stories of the victims.

a sign against anti -Semitism

The student Viktoria Miersch is extremely concerned: "It scares me that anti -Semitism will be so strong again." Her mother, Sabine Kölbl-Miersch, agrees and emphasizes that the upcoming new elections cause a queasy feeling. Together they stand in front of the freshly polished stumbling block and reflect on the past. "It is wrong what this person has happened," says Viktoria and quotes the Talmud: "A person is only forgotten when his name is forgotten."

The stumbling blocks are part of a worldwide project by the artist Gunther Demnig, which includes over 113,000 memorial stones. But the memory is not estimated everywhere: ten stumbling blocks were recently stolen in Zeitz, which underlines the urgency of the memorial campaigns in Dachau. The students actively deal with the story to ensure that the names and fates of the victims never have been forgotten.
