Heroic deed in Cham: 120 animals saved! The cause of the fire in the stable is being investigated
A fire broke out in a cowshed in Cham, Switzerland, early on Tuesday morning, September 23, 2025. The fire report was received by the Zug police shortly before 6:30 a.m., whereupon the Cham fire department and the Zug base fire department (FFZ) were alerted. When they arrived, the emergency services discovered heavy smoke and a fire in the stable. Around 120 cattle were housed in the stable at this time.
The 56-year-old local farmer acted immediately by taking the majority of the animals outside and starting the fire extinguishing work himself. Thanks to his quick actions and the rapid intervention of the fire department, the flames were quickly extinguished and the stable was cleared of smoke. Fortunately, both the farmer and another person were uninjured and the animals suffered no damage.
Cause of fire and emergency services
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the Zug police forensic service. Preliminary investigations point to an automatic litter machine as a possible cause. The exact amount of damage has not yet been quantified, but the quick and coordinated measures of around 50 members of the Cham fire department, the Zug base fire department, the fire department inspectorate, the Zug rescue service and the Zug police made a decisive contribution to preventing anything worse from happening.
These incidents contrast with other, more serious animal disasters in which tens of thousands of animals burned to death in stables. The Augsburger Allgemeine reported that many animals lose their lives in such fires every year. A particularly tragic case occurred at the end of May when a fire in a pigsty resulted in around 900 pigs dying, representing one of the largest animal disasters in Germany's history.
In summary, it can be said that the quick action of the farmer and the emergency services in Cham meant that all around 120 animals remained unharmed. This shows how important clear emergency plans and quick reactions in critical situations are to ensure animal welfare.
