Heat turn in Bayreuth: New heating center brings fresh wind!

A monumental project takes shape: A new heat center of the Bayreuth Stadtwerke is built on Ludwig-Thoma-Straße, which will soon supply the city center with environmentally friendly district heating. Where the horses were once housed by the Margravial Reitergarnison, a future -oriented building is now being created, the past and future uniquely combined. Stadtwerke Managing Director Markus Rützel speaks of a "stroke of luck" because the property previously belonged to the Bayreuth animal protection association, which can now finance the renovation of his animal shelter through the sale.

The new heating center will master two challenges. On the one hand, the area offers enough space to gradually expand heat production, which is urgently required given the high demand in the district heating network. On the other hand, the heat production of natural gas is converted to regenerative energy sources. Stadtwerke plan to use waste heat from the neighboring company Blaha and to feed them into the district heating network using heat pumps. This enables the strict legal requirements of the Federal Government, which until 2030 call for a third of district heating from regenerative sources to meet much earlier.

a win for everyone involved

The advantages of the project are clear to everyone involved: Blaha managing director Carsten Lages emphasizes that the conversion of waste heat into regenerative heat is an active contribution to the heat transition. The animal protection association also benefits from the decision to sell the property, and sees it a chance to make the future of Bayreuth positively. "We are proud to be able to contribute to the heat transition in our city," says city councilor Mirko Matros, board member of the animal welfare association.

Mayor Thomas Ebersberger emphasizes the importance of district heating for the city's climate target: "We want to be climate -neutral by 2040, and the heat transition is a crucial lever for it." Stadtwerke actively advocate driving the transformation towards regenerative district heating, and the new heating center on Ludwig-Thoma-Straße is considered a milestone for the city's heat supply. With investment costs of around 1.3 million euros, the first heat delivery will be expected in the coming year.
