Closure of the Regnitz: Buger Bridge causes chaos for canoeists!

The city of Bamberg has issued a general decree for the use of the waters in the area of the Buger Bridge, which is valid until December 31, 2024. This measure is necessary due to the upcoming construction work on the new Franz Fischer Bridge and particularly affects the crossing of the Regnitz in the area of this bridge.

As part of the order, it is generally forbidden to drive on the Regnitz with non-motorized vehicles. These include canoes, kayaks, folding boats, rowing boats, stand up paddles, inflatable boats, pedal boats and rafts. The city of Bamberg informs water users in advance about the regulations, which are also made clear by signs on site. However, the transit ban is only applied if the construction work requires a closure, such as Wiesentbote reported.

Start of construction and safety measures

Construction work on the new Franz Fischer Bridge began on May 10, 2023 and led to the waterway on the Regnitz being closed due to safety concerns. Crane operation and suspended loads, as well as dredging and slewing work, pose a potential danger for water users. During this time, driving through the Regnitz in the area of the bridge, both 30 meters downstream and 50 meters upstream, with non-motorized vehicles was prohibited from May to August 2023 in Franconia reported.

The construction site operating hours are Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Entry and exit points for water users either already exist or are being created to ensure safe use of water bodies. The regulation is to be maintained until August 31, 2023 at the latest, with the aim of enabling passage via a “corridor” in the structural framework from September 1, 2023.
