Kaufbeuren Children's University: Big discoveries about small atoms!

The Kaufbeuren Children's University was an exciting opportunity for inquisitive young minds to delve deep into the world of physics. Professor Dr. Markus Heyl from the University of Augsburg introduced the children to the secrets of atoms in an exciting lecture. He explained the structure of a hydrogen atom and brought the matter to life with vivid comparisons: an electron orbiting an atomic nucleus was compared to a planet orbiting its sun. “Science shows with clear evidence what is right and what is wrong,” emphasized Heyl, supporting this with examples from everyday life, such as the creation of chocolate from atoms.  As the district messenger reports, the children were able to go home with new knowledge after an interactive question and answer session.

Augsburg Children's University: Physics and much more

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, the University of Augsburg also invites you to the children's university to further explore the topic of atoms. Here Professor Heyl and his colleague Prof. Francesco Piazza will answer exciting questions for the young researchers: Why does a pretzel fall down? How can an airplane fly? The last question is all about the smallest building blocks in the world – the atoms. Participants are also allowed to bring their own chocolate to make what they have learned even more tangible. While the children study in the lecture hall, their companions are kept up to date via video transmission in a neighboring room. As the University of Augsburg reports, the children not only gain extensive knowledge of physics, but they also have the opportunity to collect stamps for their “Studienbuch” passport, which they can receive for regular visits.

The Children's University is a perfect platform to promote curiosity and scientific thinking by learning to understand basic physics concepts in a playful way.
