Wunsiedel becomes CO2-neutral: New solar power contract for the region!

A groundbreaking contract between Ørsted and the Stadtwerke Wunsiedel (SWW) marks the beginning of a new era of renewable energies in Bavaria. From January 1, 2025, Wunsiedel will be supplied with green solar power from two new solar parks, which together offer an impressive performance of 15.1 megawatts. This long-term contract, also known as the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), runs over ten years and secures the delivery of around 167 gigawatt hours of solar energy, enough to supply around 5,600 households annually, such as stadt-und-werk.de reported.

The two solar parks, Amberg Süd and Altenschwand, are integral components of the regional energy transition. The Altenschwand solar park, which has been in operation since November 2022, delivers 10.4 megawatts, while Amberg Süd, only became active in September 2024. Marco Krasser, managing director of SWW, emphasized the importance of this agreement: "We are proud that we can supply our municipality 100 percent CO₂-neutral." This decision will not only strengthen energy supply security, but will also make a direct contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in the region, which makes a decisive contribution to the municipal climate goals. Stefan Bachmaier, Managing Director of Ørsted Onshore Germany, also praised the contract as an important step to promote the local energy transition and the first direct current delivery of Ørsted in Germany, such as renewalbareenergien.de determined.

a milestone for the region

This PPA gives Ørsted the opportunity to refinance the solar parks without government funding. This is not only a significant success for the company, but also a clear sign of the power of decentralized and sustainable energy supply in Germany. Stadtwerke Wunsiedel consistently rely on renewable sources and prove how local actors can actively contribute to the energy transition. The systems are part of a comprehensive strategy for promoting renewable energies in the region and contributing to strengthening the economic basis, while they are also making an active contribution to climate protection.
