Stuttgart, Deutschland - A dramatic power failure shaked Stuttgart-West on Monday morning! Around 3,000 people were affected when a short circuit snapped out the lights in a medium -voltage cable. But don't panic! After only 20 minutes the disorder was fixed. According to Stuttgart networks, such incidents are not uncommon - the city is haunted by power outages about 50 times a year. A spokesman emphasizes: "This is nothing unusual!"

What happens when the electricity fails? While mobile phone networks often continue to work if the central nodes are not affected, it looks different for internet supply. WLAN routers need electricity and fail in the event of a failure. The water supply usually remains intact, unless there is a large -scale blackout. In this case, even the water supply could be at risk. The state water supply can at least supply three million people with water in an emergency, but with a reduced water flow.

What is a blackout?

A blackout is more than just a short power failure - it is a large collapse of the power supply, which affects many people at the same time. Such disasters can be triggered by overload, sabotage or natural events. While smaller failures are usually quickly remedied, major disorders can also endanger critical infrastructures such as hospitals or retirement homes. The Stuttgart citizens can calm down, however: the power grid is robust and provides over 630,000 people in the region. On average, each citizen is only about seven minutes a year without electricity. In comparison, the value in other cities and countries is significantly higher. Stuttgart Netze is continuously working on renewing and expanding the network in order to meet the increasing requirements!
