Cotter back in Baden-Württemberg: blessing or curse for fishermen?

In a dramatic comeback, the otter again conquer the waters of Baden-Württemberg! After almost 100 years of absence, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Environment has confirmed that these charming but feared predators are back. The sweet animals, which conquer their hearts in the storm on social media, have a preference for fish, crabs and frogs, and can eat up to 15 percent of their body weight every day! The last sightings of a otter in the region date from 1925 - now they are back!

otters are back - but not everyone is happy!

The return of the otter is celebrated by the FDP as a success in species protection, but the concerns grow! The Free Democrats warn of a rapid spread of animals and demand a counseling center for fish breeders and fishing fishermen. Klaus Hoher, the FDP's nature conservation policy spokesman, suggests that in exceptional cases the animals should be possible to avoid conflicts. The concern for fish farming is great, because the Otter could soon cause massive damage!

The state association of professional fishermen and pond hosts Baden-Württemberg also raises the alarm. In an interview, they expressed that the otter have not yet caused any damage, but this was only a matter of time. They suspect that more Otter already live in the region than has been documented before. If the threat to fish breeding increases, professional fishermen also think about a shooting down.

Environment Ministry remains calm
