Safe school bus rides: Ravensburg police train fifth graders!

An exciting school bus training course for the 5th grades of primary and secondary schools recently took place in Wuchzenhofen. Ms. Doubt from the Ravensburg Police Headquarters was on site and carried out this special training, which is all about traffic accident prevention. The students were not only imparted theoretical knowledge, but they were also able to gain practical experience. In modern times, when smartphones and headphones often cause distraction, it is particularly important that children learn to use the school bus safely.

In two-part sessions, the students received a lot of information about safe behavior at stops and on and around the bus. A central topic was the dangers that can arise from the use of mobile devices. For example, the children learned how important it is to be careful when riding the bus so as not to endanger themselves or others. It was also pointed out how to behave correctly in a dangerous moment.

Practical exercises for more safety

An unusual feature of the program is that the fifth graders were able to try out a lot of things themselves. For example, they learned how to open the bus doors in an emergency without the driver's help. Another exciting element was the roof hatch, which can be used in the event of an accident, such as the bus tipping over or falling over. Operating the emergency hammer was also part of the program, which gave the children a feeling for the seriousness of the situation.

The practical training took place both at the bus stop and in the mobile bus. There was close cooperation with the local transport companies and school social work in Leutkirch. A highlight of the training was the brake test, in which the students, sitting in the bus, were able to feel the forces exerted during an emergency stop at a speed of 25 km/h. This experience impressively conveyed to the children how abrupt and unpredictable traffic situations can be.

The event was supported by various organizations and initiatives and aimed to raise students' awareness about road safety. The students were very interested and many of them said that they were now much better prepared to ride the school bus safely. The exchange between the police, the transport companies and the schools is an important step in traffic prevention work, as it promotes sustainable sensitization among younger generations.
