Mannheim in transition: Heating forces gas consumers to realign it!

In Mannheim there is a fundamental change in the heating sector: the gas network is to be shut down by 2035. This has far -reaching consequences for heating technology and the actors on the market. Norbert Ufer, an experienced heating engineer who has been installing heating for decades, has to reorient himself with his company. He is currently heating with gas and lives with his family in the Mannheim garden city.

The upcoming switch to CO2-free heat generation is part of a larger plan to achieve the climate goals from the EU, the federal government, state and municipality. The heat sector plays a crucial role in the fight against global climate change. MVV has developed the so -called Mannheim model, which aims to achieve climate -positive results by 2035. The aim is also to green the district heating in Mannheim by 2030 and to connect about 10,000 new buildings, such as MVV

The challenges of the heat transition

MVV recommends that your customers switch to alternative heating forms, since Fossil operated gas heating are not considered sustainable. From 2035, MVV will no longer offer products and services on a fossil basis. The EU gas-based market directive, which will come into force from August 2024, obliges gas distribution network operators to create decommissioning plans. MVV informs the citizens at an early stage that switching to CO2-free heat generation is necessary. In addition, experts expect rising gas prices due to higher CO2 prices.

However,

biomethane and hydrogen are not considered practical alternatives for private households. In addition, the wages of the network operators will increase because fewer customers use the gas network. The municipal heat plan, which was decided on March 12, 2024, recommends district heating and heat pumps as priority forms of heating. MVV offers comprehensive advice on planning, installation, promotion and financing.

In this context, MVV regularly organizes citizens' information events for the heat transition in order to inform the population about the changes and to make funding and financing options for the heating exchange, including KfW funding and municipal support. Business customers that are connected to the gas high pressure network also receive individual advice on alternative solutions, whereby hydrogen is considered an option, such as West-Ost-Medien
