Piastri on course for the title: Jeddah as a turning point in the F1 battle!
Max Verstappen fans can look forward to an improved racing experience in Jeddah compared to the previous race in Bahrain. After the first races of the season, it appears that tire wear on the Saudi track is less critical. Verstappen, who finished sixth in the Bahrain Grand Prix, particularly praised his car's handling in fast corners, which is of particular importance in Jeddah. Before the start of the season it was already clear that the roles between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were clear: Norris as team leader and Piastri as challenger.
Important factors for the title fight will be the consistency and performance of both drivers. Piastri, who feels more comfortable in the MCL25 than his teammate Norris, could take the championship lead in Jeddah if he manages to deliver a better qualifying. Norris, on the other hand, has to at least keep up with Piastri in the race in order not to take on the role of pursuer. Given the long season, he already feels under pressure to take countermeasures.
Results and race prospects
Oscar Piastri celebrated his second win of the season in the Bahrain Grand Prix after starting the race from pole position. This was not only his personal triumph, but also the first victory for McLaren in Bahrain. His teammate Lando Norris, who started the race from sixth place, had to settle for third place, although he temporarily dropped back to 14th position due to a five-second penalty. Despite this challenge, Norris leads the overall standings by three points over Piastri. Verstappen is five points behind in third place.
The race strategy and handling of the tires could be crucial. While Piastri and Norris aimed for the top, the competition, especially Mercedes driver George Russell, who defended his position despite technical problems and a farmer's rule, climbed to second place. Charles Leclerc from Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton from the Mercedes team took fourth and fifth place.
Tire understanding and team dynamics
A central issue among the teams is tire wear. Red Bull's Helmut Marko stated that tire wear is higher than expected and this also posed a challenge in the Melbourne race. Verstappen was able to keep up with Norris in the dogfight, but lost significant time after a mistake on the 17th lap. This intensifies the competitive situation, as Red Bull suffers restrictions due to tire wear during the racing tactics.
Red Bull's Christian Horner noted that McLaren has developed high efficiency in handling the tires, which allowed them to dominate the race in Melbourne. McLaren boss Zak Brown and team boss Andrea Stella emphasize that the vehicle has the ability to protect the tires better and thus secure a competitive advantage. Despite this success, McLaren must continue to perform consistently well to maintain success in the coming races.
Teams are now preparing for the next Grand Prix in Jeddah, where conditions could potentially be better for all drivers. The pressure will be on both Norris and Piastri, while Verstappen will try to put his slump in form behind him and get back into title contention.
