Heidelberg sets limits: only 1,200 e-scooters in the city!
Heidelberg, Deutschland - Heidelberg pulls the ripcord on e-scooters! The city administration has decided with an overwhelming majority of a new concept that drastically reduces the number of rentable e-scooters. In the future, only three providers will be able to provide a maximum of 1,200 e-scooters in the city. A clear step to tame chaos on the streets!
The regulation is no coincidence. Pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users were repeatedly hindered by wildly parked e-scooters. In order to counteract this, users can only park their vehicles in the city center on specially designated areas. Since the introduction of the e-scooter in 2019, when there were still around 1,700 e-scooters from four providers, the Situation in the university city has changed significantly.
technical requirements and new storage areas
The new rules also bring technical requirements. The providers must install sensors that automatically report the fallen e-scooters. If you park your vehicle outside the designated areas, you cannot end the rental process and must continue to pay! In the coming years, the city is planning to create up to 90 new storage areas in the core zone, with costs of up to 135,000 euros. The providers are involved in these expenses via fees.
Heidelberg is not only with these measures. The German Association of Cities and Municipalities has already found that more and more municipalities are introducing concrete contingents or driving bans for e-scooters. In neighboring countries, as in Paris, the rental scooters have even been completely banned since last year after a citizen survey had shown that 89 percent of the participants were against e-scooter rental. The E-Scooter Revolution is faltering!
