Alarming violence in schools: Ostholstein is fighting against digital aggression!

Ostholstein.Alarming news from schools: Over 1,200 acts of violence were registered across Germany last year, and the number of unreported cases could be much higher! In Ostholstein, schools are feeling the effects of this worrying development. Karsten Lemke, the headmaster of the Gerhard Hilgendorf School in Stockelsdorf, warns: "The inhibition threshold has dropped. It happens much more often that students lying on the ground are kicked." Fortunately, the injuries are mostly minor, but the increase in violence is obvious.

The biggest problem? Digital violence! Lemke describes the situation as a “wildfire”. Students spread private messages and images without regard to the consequences. “They lack awareness of it,” he explains. To counteract this, the topic of media security is addressed at the introduction evening for new fifth graders. Parents are challenged because they often model unhealthy consumer behavior for their children and give them uncontrolled access to digital media too early.

Coastal High School Neustadt: Social workers ensure exchange

The situation looks a little better at the coastal high school in Neustadt. Thanks to a comprehensive prevention concept and two dedicated social workers, immediate action is taken if problems arise. Marco Gregorius, one of the social workers, reports: “Students often come to us themselves or we receive tips from teachers.” What is particularly worrying is the increase in verbal derailments, which can also be observed among the youngest. Exclusion is one of the worst experiences for many students, and it often takes place online.

The Ostsee-Gymnasium in Timmendorfer Strand also focuses on prevention. Headmaster Cordula Braun emphasizes the need for media lessons to teach students how to use cell phones responsibly. Team building activities and self-defense projects are also offered to prepare students for possible threats. At the Strand elementary and community school in Timmendorf, a ban on cell phones during school hours is successfully implemented, which leads to more direct contact between students and promotes social interactions.
