A44: Germany's most expensive motorway remains an expensive tragedy
A look back at the lengthy construction of the A 44 between Kassel and Eisenach: costs, challenges and historical significance.
A44: Germany's most expensive motorway remains an expensive tragedy
A monumental construction project that has stirred emotions for over 90 years! The A 44 motorway, which is supposed to connect Kassel with Eisenach, remains a tragedy and an expensive chapter in German traffic history. Despite its historical importance as an east-west connection, the highway was never fully completed. The construction, which began in the 1930s, is now known as the most expensive motorway in Germany - and possibly even the world. The costs are exploding, with estimates between 2.4 and 2.7 billion euros for the 70 kilometer route. A madness that drives taxpayers to despair!
The incredible cost explosion of the A44
The A 44 has become a symbol of mismanagement and delays. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1997, but little remains of the planned progress. Instead, those responsible are struggling with ever new challenges, from conservation concerns to technical glitches. The route, which will take drivers over 16 bridges and through 13 tunnels, is a masterpiece of engineering - but also a planning nightmare. The costs per kilometer exceed the usual values by five to six times!
The motorway construction company Deges speaks of delivery bottlenecks and stolen components that are further delaying construction. The completion date originally planned for 2022 has already been pushed back several times, and December 9, 2024 is now being considered as the new date - but no one dares to officially confirm this date. After decades of bankruptcies, bad luck and mishaps, confidence in the completion of the A 44 is at a low point!
